Quick answer
Rain barrel rebates on the Peninsula: The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Sunnyvale checked the programs in October 2026: San Mateo County residents can get up to 100, 150 or $200 per rain barrel depending on size through BAWSCA and Flows To Bay, and Sunnyvale city water customers get up to $50 per barrel through BAWSCA, both through June 30, 2027. In Santa Clara County, Valley Water pays up to $35 per barrel, 50 cents per gallon for cisterns and up to $300 for a rain garden (Palo Alto Utilities customers get double), and every program needs gutters and a downspout feeding the unit. Peninsula Rain Rebate Guide
Who pays Peninsula homeowners to catch rain, and what your gutters need first
Where you live decides which program pays. In Santa Clara County, Valley Water runs the Landscape Rebate Program, and its Rainwater Capture Rebate covers rain barrels, cisterns and rain gardens for homes in Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Los Altos, Santa Clara and Palo Alto. Palo Alto Utilities customers get a doubled rate because the city shares the cost. Valley Water also pays $200, or 400 in Palo Alto and Santa Clara Utilities areas, for a laundry to landscape graywater system. In San Mateo County, BAWSCA processes a rain barrel rebate funded by Flows To Bay, the countywide stormwater program, and ten local water agencies add $50 on top. Sunnyvale city water customers also have their own BAWSCA barrel rebate.
Every one of these is really a gutter program. Valley Water requires existing gutters and downspouts along the roof perimeter, and the barrel has to receive all the water from a downspout unimpeded. BAWSCA wants two photos showing the downspout connection, the secured lid and the overflow, and it does not allow copper materials, downspouts included, because of leaching. Overflow has to run back to the downspout system, a drain or a rain garden, away from the house and the neighbor’s yard.
The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Sunnyvale is owned by Eric Dodge and holds California contractor license 1123680. We do not sell barrels, but we get the roofline ready for one: seamless gutters formed on-site to close gaps, aluminum or steel downspouts placed where the barrel will sit, and BroGuard mesh that keeps oak leaves and redwood needles out of the tank. Where overflow needs somewhere to go, we route it with downspout extensions instead of letting it pool at the foundation.

Why the Brothers
Why Peninsula Homeowners Call the Brothers
Perimeter gutters, a downspout feeding the unit, overflow away from the house: we set the roofline up to match what Valley Water and BAWSCA ask for.
BAWSCA bars copper materials, downspouts included, so we fit the barrel downspout in aluminum or steel even on a copper system.
Oaks, redwoods, pines and liquidambar shed all season. BroGuard and a fall cleaning keep that debris out of your stored rain.

“The Brothers were great to work with. Quick response, easy scheduling, flexible accommodation of our requests. Front man Max and get ’er done Robert both knew their stuff. Every San Mateo County resident can get $50 for a 50 to 99 gallon barrel, 100 for 100 to 199 gallons, or 150 for 200 gallons or more, funded by Flows To Bay. Customers of ten participating agencies, including Menlo Park Municipal Water, Redwood City (not Cal Water customers), San Mateo, Burlingame and Pacifica’s North Coast County Water District, add 50 more. This guide reflects the FY 2026 to 27 terms.
Valley Water’s base Rainwater Capture rates are up to $35 per 40 to 199 gallon barrel, 50 cents per gallon for a cistern of 200 gallons or more, and $1 per square foot of roof diverted to a rain garden, up to 300. Palo Alto Utilities customers get $70, $1 and $2 up to 600. You must get a written Notice to Proceed before buying anything.
Yes. Valley Water requires existing gutters and downspouts along the roof perimeter, and the barrel must take all the water from a downspout unimpeded. BAWSCA requires the barrel to connect to a downspout or rain chain and wants photos of that connection. As this guide notes, fix gutter gaps before you apply.
Not for a BAWSCA rebate. Its rules say copper materials, including downspouts, are not allowed because of potential leaching. Valley Water says not to harvest from roofs with copper or untreated galvanized metal. If you want copper gutters, one option is an aluminum or steel downspout on the run that feeds the barrel. Confirm your setup with the program before you buy.
Yes, two possible paths. City of Sunnyvale water customers can get up to $50 per barrel of 50 gallons or more through BAWSCA from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027, applying within 90 days of purchase. As a Santa Clara County address, Sunnyvale also falls under Valley Water’s program. Ask both programs whether they can be combined, since this guide could not confirm it.
