Gutter styles and parts on the Peninsula
Beyond the profile: the parts that decide how long a gutter lasts
K-style or half-round is the choice you see from the street. The hangers, downspouts and corners are the choices that decide whether the system is still straight and tight after years of winter storms.
When we look at a sagging, leaking system on the Peninsula, the gutter itself is often fine. The failure is in the parts. Older homes still carry gutters hung with nails driven through ferrules, and every year the fascia swells in the wet months and shrinks through the dry summer, working those nails a little further out. Eventually a run lets go at one end and the rest follows.
That is why a gutter quote should name the hanger, the downspout size and how the corners are sealed, not just the profile and color. Two systems that look identical from the curb can have very different lives depending on what holds them up.
Profile still matters. K-style, with its flat back and molded front, carries a lot of water for its size and the shape adds strength. Half-round reads softer and more traditional, and suits period homes and copper work. Both can be formed as radius gutters around a curved wall.
Hangers: what actually holds the gutter up
| Hanger | How it attaches | Our take |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Screw hidden hanger | The screw comes already started in the hanger and goes in on an angle, through the gutter back and into the fascia | The strongest option, with a reinforced screw shaft and an arched base |
| Heavy duty hidden hanger | Screwed in, corrugated inside for added strength | Better than a standard hidden hanger, not as strong as Quick Screw |
| Standard hidden hanger | Screwed in, plain body | Cheaper, and it shortens the life of the system |
| Nail and ferrule | Nail through the front of the gutter, a ferrule and the back into the fascia | The old standard; nails work loose as the wood moves and runs fall |
| Half-round hanger | Bracket on the fascia, gutter laid in, spring clip over the front lip | The right way to hold a half-round trough securely |
Downspout options
| Downspout | Sizes | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangular | 2 by 3 inch and 3 by 4 inch | 2 by 3 with 5 inch gutters, 3 by 4 with 6 inch or larger roof areas |
| Round corrugated | 3 and 4 inch | Extra strength and a classic accent, especially with copper |
| Round smooth | 3 and 4 inch, copper only | A clean, elegant look; dents more easily than corrugated |
Round and rectangular downspouts move water and debris about equally, so the choice between them is about looks and strength, not capacity.
The small parts that finish a system
- Gutter wedges, which fill the gap when the fascia is slanted or has molding behind the gutter.
- Corner miters sealed in three places: the manufacturer’s seam, the inside overlap and the top.
- Bay miters for the 45 degree corners around an angled bay window or bonus room.
- End caps crimped and sealed with silicone so water cannot leave the end of a run.
- Elbows to carry the downspout from the eave back to the wall, and again at the bottom to turn water away from the foundation.
- Conductor heads, in aluminum or copper, that add style and hold surge water where one downspout takes a lot.
- Roof straps where a house has no fascia to hang from.
Every part is specified on your written estimate. Read about sizing on the gutter size guide, metals on the specialty materials page, and what happens when old hangers have already pulled away on our gutter repair page. If the fascia is too soft to hold new hangers, start with fascia board replacement. We install every profile from San Carlos and Belmont to Sunnyvale and Santa Clara.

K-style has a flat back and a front shaped like crown molding, and it is what most homes carry because it handles large amounts of water and the shape adds strength. Half-round is an open, rounded trough that reads as more traditional and decorative. Both come in 5 and 6 inch and in every material we install.
A clean K-style in a color matched to the fascia usually keeps an Eichler or mid-century ranch roofline crisp and quiet. Craftsman and older traditional homes often suit half-round, and copper half-round is a classic accent on period houses. A Solutionist matches the profile to the architecture, from Sunnyvale ranches to modern builds.
Yes. Both K-style and half-round can be formed as radius gutters that follow a curved section of the house, like a semicircular bay or entry. Radius work is the most difficult type of gutter installation and is not offered by most gutter companies. For angled bay windows, bay miters turn the 45 degree corners cleanly.
A 2 by 3 inch downspout is the standard with 5 inch gutters, and a 3 by 4 inch downspout usually goes with 6 inch gutters because the bigger trough takes on more water. Round downspouts come in 3 and 4 inch, corrugated or smooth, with smooth round offered in copper only. Round and rectangular carry water about equally.
Screw-in hidden hangers. The Quick Screw hidden hanger is the strongest option, with a pre-started screw driven at an angle through the back of the gutter into the fascia. Many older Peninsula homes still have nail and ferrule hangers, and those nails work loose as the wood expands and contracts, which is why so many old runs sag.
Every corner miter is sealed in three places: the manufacturer’s seam in the middle, the inside where the gutters overlap into it, and the top where the runs meet. On a seamless system the corners are where the joints are, so that triple seal is what keeps a winter downpour inside the gutter.
