Fascia board work in Sunnyvale and the Peninsula

What we find when the gutter comes off, and what we do about it

Fascia rot hides behind the gutter until the day the gutter comes down. This is how we judge the board, the four ways to fix it, and how the job runs.

On the Peninsula, fascia lives through two hard seasons a year. All winter, any water that slips behind the gutter soaks into the board. Then a long dry summer bakes it. Wood that swells and shrinks every year opens its paint, lets the next winter in deeper, and slowly loosens whatever is screwed or nailed into it.

The trouble is that the worst damage sits exactly where you cannot see it: the strip of board covered by the back of the gutter. From the ground the paint may look tired but fine. Once we pull the run, we often find the wood dark and soft along the line where water has been running between the gutter and the fascia.

That is why we never quote fascia work as a guess. We tell you what the visible signs suggest, and we tell you plainly when the final answer comes after the gutter is off.

Four ways to give a gutter something solid to hang on

OptionWhen it fitsWhat to know
Aluminum fascia wrapThe board is sound and you are tired of repainting itComes in multiple sizes and covers the wood. Never used to hide rot.
Board replacementWood is soft, split or crumbling under the gutter lineThe rotted section comes out, new board goes in, the gutter goes back on new hangers.
Roof strapsNo fascia, and adding it is not practicalHolds well, though a fascia mount is stronger, and the straps show from the street. Not for slate, tile or cedar shingle roofs.
Build out the overhangOpen rafter tails with no fascia at allExtends the overhang and adds a true fascia to hang the gutter on.

How a fascia replacement runs

  1. Probe and mark.Your Solutionist presses along each run, checks the paint line and marks the sections that look suspect on the estimate.
  2. Take the gutter down. The run comes off carefully so it can go back up if the metal is still good.
  3. Cut out the bad wood.Rotted board is removed back to sound material, and we show you what came out.
  4. Install new fascia.New board goes in, ready for paint or an aluminum wrap if you want to stop repainting.
  5. Rehang on screw-in hangers. The gutter goes back with new hangers driven into the new wood, pitched toward the downspouts.
  6. Test with water. We run water through the system to confirm it drains and nothing slips behind the gutter again.

Signs to look for from the ground

  • Paint peeling or bubbling in a band right below the roof edge.
  • Dark streaks or water stains on the board under the gutter.
  • A gutter that sags between hangers or tips away from the house.
  • Gaps where the back of the gutter no longer sits tight to the wood.
  • Birds, wasps or rodents getting in at the roof edge or soffit.
  • Older homes with exposed rafter tails and water marks on the wall below.

Fascia often turns up during a gutter repair visit or ahead of a new seamless gutter installation, and it belongs to the same water path as underground drainage. If the old gutter was the reason the board rotted, replacing both at once is usually the cheaper path, since the roof edge is already open. We do this work across Sunnyvale, Los Altos, San Carlos and the rest of the Peninsula.

Fascia Board Questions, Answered

What are the signs of rotted fascia behind my gutters?

Peeling paint, soft or darkened wood, stains on the board and a gutter sagging between hangers are the common signs. Rot is often hidden until the gutter comes off, but if water has been running between the fascia and the gutter for a while, the odds are high the board is rotting behind it.

Is aluminum fascia wrap a good fix for Peninsula homes?

Yes, when the board underneath is still solid. Aluminum fascia wrap comes in multiple sizes, covers the wood and ends the repainting cycle on fascia that has spent years soaking up winter rain and baking through dry summers. Where the board is soft or rotted, wrap would only hide the problem, so we replace the board before the gutter goes back up.

Can gutters be installed on a house with no fascia?

Yes. Some older homes, including Colonial and Victorian styles with ornate rafter tails, were built without fascia. We can hang gutters with roof straps secured to the roof, or build out the overhang and add fascia to hang them on. Roof straps are not recommended on slate, tile or cedar shingle roofs, and on an older roof the strap usually sits on top of the shingles.

Is fascia stronger than roof straps for holding gutters?

Yes. Hangers screwed into fascia bite into wood grain that runs horizontally, which holds far better than screws in rafter end grain or straps laid over shingles. Roof straps are strong but not as strong as fascia, and they are more visible. Fascia also gives soffit a place to attach and closes the attic to insects and animals.

Do you install soffit too?

Yes. Soffit is the layer that runs from the bottom of the fascia back to the wall, and together they protect the rafters while letting the attic breathe through vents. We install perforated vinyl soffit where it is missing or damaged, which helps keep attic temperatures even through a warm Peninsula summer.

Do I need new gutters if my fascia is rotted?

Not always. The gutter comes down, the rotted board is replaced, and if the gutter is still sound it goes back up with new hangers. If the gutter is old, sagging or undersized, that is a smart moment to form a new seamless run, since the roof edge is already open. Your Solutionist will price both options.
