Underground drainage on the Peninsula

Getting roof water away from the house, not just off the roof

A gutter collects the water. Where it goes next decides whether your foundation, patio and walkways stay dry through a winter of storms.

Peninsula rain tends to come in bursts. Months of dry weather end with a string of winter storms, and a single downspout can deliver a lot of water to one small patch of ground in a few hours. Dry, hard soil does not soak that up fast. It runs along the surface, pools by the slab and follows the loose backfill down beside the foundation.

Underground drainage solves that by connecting the downspout to a buried line that carries the water well away from the house before it is let out. Done right, you lose the splash block, the muddy trench and the slick spot on the walkway, and the soil beside the house stops taking on water every time a storm rolls through.

We also clear existing underground lines as an add-on to a gutter cleaning. Many of the drains we find on older Peninsula homes were working once and are now packed with years of needles and grit that washed down from an unprotected gutter.

The trifecta, in the order we build it

  1. Right-sized gutters that work.Underground lines can only carry what the gutters deliver, so the system above has to be sound, pitched and big enough first.
  2. Fine mesh on top.A BroGuard micro-mesh guard keeps redwood and pine needles, oak leaves and grit out of the downspout and out of the buried pipe.
  3. Buried lines that carry it away. The downspouts connect to underground pipe that takes the water far from the house to a safe outlet.

Signs your existing drain is struggling

  • Water bubbling up or pooling over the spot where the line runs.
  • Gutters overflowing even right after a cleaning.
  • A downspout that backs up at the ground connection during heavy rain.
  • Debris visible inside the drain opening.
  • Soggy ground along the buried route days after the rain stops.

Rerouting instead of breaking concrete

Sometimes the easiest way to get water underground is to change where it comes down. We can move where the downspouts come down, sometimes to another side of the house entirely, so the buried line runs through soil instead of under a driveway or patio. Your Solutionist looks for that option before suggesting anyone cut concrete. It is part of our wider exterior solutions work, often paired with new seamless gutters, and available across the Peninsula from Santa Clara to Daly City.

Underground Gutter Drainage Questions, Answered

Where does underground gutter drainage send the water?

Downspouts connect to buried lines that carry roof water to daylight, a drywell or a storm connection, well away from the house. That keeps the soil around the foundation from soaking through a Peninsula winter, and it gets rid of the splash block and puddle at the base of every downspout.

How do I know my underground drain is clogged?

Watch for water pooling in the yard where the drain runs, or gutters that overflow even right after a cleaning. Sometimes you can spot the clog at the drain opening. If you are not sure, call (650) 600-0598 for a free estimate and a Solutionist will check how the line is flowing.

What is the gutter trifecta?

It is our three-part setup for protecting a home: properly sized, well-functioning gutters, a mesh gutter guard like BroGuard over them, and underground drainage carrying the water far from the house. The guard matters because a clog underground usually means paying a drain clearing company, which is expensive and not guaranteed.

Can downspouts be moved away from my driveway or walkway?

Yes. Downspouts that drain across walkways and driveways cause slips, so we take them underground and away from high-traffic areas. In some cases we reroute the gutters and downspouts to a different side of the house first, so there is no need to dig up concrete to get the water underground.

Can underground drainage help a wet garage or basement?

Often, yes. When gutters drop water inside the footprint of the house, it follows the backfill straight to the foundation. Many wet basements and flooded garages are fixed by repairing a broken gutter, stopping overflow or adding underground drains. Our Solutionists are trained to spot poor drainage during the estimate.

Does underground drainage need maintenance?

A little. Buried lines can clog without upkeep, and regular gutter cleaning keeps leaves, needles and grit from washing down into them in the first place. A mesh guard like BroGuard on the gutters above is the best protection, and a maintenance schedule keeps the downspouts flushed every season.
