Gutter guards on the Peninsula
Why Peninsula gutters need a guard, and what makes a good one
Peninsula trees drop something nearly every month. Here is what a guard has to stop, how to judge one, and why BroGuard is the guard our crew installs.
The debris mix is what makes guards tricky here. Redwood and pine needles are thin enough to slide through a coarse screen and stiff enough to mat into a dam once they are inside. Liquidambar seed pods roll down the roof and wedge in outlets. Oak leaves and catkins pile up in fall, blossom lands in spring, and a dry summer leaves a layer of roof grit and dust that turns to sludge in the first rain.
A guard has to stop all of that at the surface while still letting an atmospheric river’s worth of water into the trough. Coarse screens let the needles through, and foam or brush inserts hold onto the same debris they are meant to stop. That is why we install fine metal mesh, specifically our own BroGuard.
What to look for in a guard for Peninsula debris
| What lands on your roof | What the guard has to do | How BroGuard handles it |
|---|---|---|
| Redwood and pine needles | Stop needles at the surface instead of letting them mat inside | BroGuard has a mesh opening finer than a redwood or pine needle |
| Liquidambar seed pods | Keep pods away from the outlets | Pods sit on top of the mesh, out of the trough |
| Oak and sycamore leaves | Handle a fall leaf drop without the trough filling | Leaves rest on top until wind and rain move them off |
| Blossom, pollen and roof grit | Stop the fine material without blocking water | Fine debris sits on top while heavy rain passes through |

A quick checklist before you choose any guard
- An opening finer than a redwood or pine needle.
- All metal, with no foam, brush or plastic insert sitting in the gutter.
- Fully enclosed, so leaves and nests cannot get in at the ends.
- Lets heavy winter rain through without becoming the clog.
- Sits flush over the gutter with a low profile.
- Goes on a gutter that is sized, pitched and hung right.
Why BroGuard is the guard we install
BroGuard is built around that list. It is an all-metal, fully enclosed stainless micro-mesh guard that sits flush over the gutter, so needles, seed pods and grit stay on top and dry out while rain passes straight through. It will not rust or warp, and it installs right over sound existing gutters. Installed with new seamless gutters, the whole system is backed by our Limited Lifetime Warranty, and the full terms are on the BroGuard warranty page. Read more about how it is built on the BroGuard micro-mesh page.
What a guard will not fix
- Keep leaves from resting on top of the mesh until wind or rain moves them along.
- Fix a run that sags or leaks; we repair it first or tell you it needs replacing.
- Add capacity to a gutter that is too small for the roof above it.
- Replace a periodic check on homes under heavy redwood or oak canopy.
Want to see what your trees are dropping first? Start with a gutter cleaning. Where downspouts feed buried lines, a guard protects your underground drainage by keeping leaves and needles out of the pipe, and our rain-ready checklist for Peninsula homes covers the rest of storm prep. We install BroGuard across the Peninsula, from Los Altos Hills to Hillsborough.

Frequently Asked Questions
BroGuard, the brand’s own metal micro-mesh guard. It keeps leaves, needles, seed and roof grit out of the trough while heavy rain flows through the mesh. It is all metal, with no plastic or foam, and it is installed by the same local crew that forms and repairs the gutters underneath.
Yes. A covered trough keeps out more than leaves. Guards block squirrels, birds and other small animals from nesting in the gutter, and because water no longer stands in a clogged run, mosquitos and other insects lose a breeding spot. Lichen and shingle grit stay out as well.
Yes, for Peninsula trees. Coarse screens let redwood and pine needles straight through, and foam or brush inserts trap debris and add fuel to the roofline. Fine metal mesh stops needles, oak tassel and grit at the surface while water passes through, and firm lock-on brackets hold it in place through wind-driven rain.
A tougher mix than most places. Redwood and pine needles fall all year, oak, sycamore and liquidambar leaves drop in fall, blossom and seed come in spring, and roof grit and dust build up through the dry season. A guard has to stop all of that and still take a winter storm’s worth of water.
Spring is ideal. We clear blossom, seed and pollen in April and May and install BroGuard before the dry season debris starts, so the gutters are protected when the leaves drop in fall. Summer works well too. The goal is to have guards on before the first storms of the rainy season.
Yes, and that may be their most valuable job. When debris washes into a buried line, clearing it means hiring a drain clearing service, which is expensive and not guaranteed. A mesh guard keeps leaves and needles from ever reaching the downspout, which is why we recommend guards anywhere underground drainage is installed.
