Galvanized gutters on the Peninsula
Where galvanized steel makes sense here, and where it does not
Galvanized steel is strong, affordable next to copper and has a raw mill finish people love on the right house. It is also the metal we are most careful about recommending near the coast.
Galvanized gutters are steel with a zinc coating. The zinc is what keeps the steel from rusting, and as long as that coating is intact, the gutter does its job. Rust starts where the zinc gets scratched, worn through or left wet for long stretches, which is why location and care matter more with galvanized than with any other metal we install.
Inland, on the Santa Clara Valley side of our territory, the long dry season is easy on a galvanized gutter. The bigger risks there are physical: debris that sits wet in the trough over winter, or a ladder or tree limb scraping through the coating. Near the ocean, in Pacifica, Daly City and the western neighborhoods of San Francisco, salt air works on any break in the zinc, and we will usually steer you toward Galvalume instead.
When the house and the location are right, galvanized brings something no other material does: an honest, industrial mill finish that suits contemporary homes, farmhouse styles, barns and outbuildings.
Is galvanized right for your location and finish?
| Your situation | Our honest take |
|---|---|
| Inland home, contemporary or farmhouse style, bare mill finish | A good match, and the look many owners are after |
| Inland home, painted to match the trim | Works well, and the paint adds a layer of protection |
| Barn, workshop or outbuilding | A natural fit for the look and the budget |
| Coastal home with regular salt air | We usually recommend Galvalume or aluminum instead |
| Heavy trees overhead and no guard | Possible, but plan on regular cleaning to keep wet debris off the zinc |
Keeping a galvanized system in good shape
- Clear the gutters before the first storm each fall so wet debris does not sit on the coating.
- Check for scratches after any work on the roof or nearby trees.
- Touch up or repaint scratched spots before rust gets a start.
- Keep a painted finish intact, since the paint is part of the protection.
- Keep tree limbs trimmed back so they cannot rub through the coating in the wind.
- Make sure the fascia stays solid, since steel is heavier than aluminum.
Galvanized compared with stainless steel
Homeowners sometimes ask about stainless as an upgrade. Galvanized is lighter, easier to cut and easier to keep clean, and chlorine-based bleach that can destroy the protective oxide layer on stainless does not do that to galvanized. Both install without much trouble. For most homes that want steel, the real comparison is galvanized against Galvalume, which costs more but lasts longer.
Ask your Solutionist whether a seamless galvanized run is available for your roofline. You can compare it with the other metals on the specialty materials guide, read why coastal homes lean toward Galvalume gutters, or get on a schedule with our maintenance program to keep the trough clear. We install galvanized from Woodside and Emerald Hills to Sunnyvale.

They are for the right house. Galvanized steel is strong, paintable and has a mill finish that suits contemporary, industrial and farmhouse styles, and it costs much less than copper. Near the coast, in Pacifica, Daly City and San Francisco, salt air is harder on steel, so Galvalume is often the better steel choice there.
Galvanized steel weighs less, cuts more easily and is simpler to clean. Chlorine-based bleach can damage the protective oxide layer on stainless steel but not on galvanized. Both install without much trouble. Galvanized also brings a mill finish that suits contemporary homes, and it is a cost efficient choice, fairly inexpensive compared to copper.
Galvanized gutters are available in K-style, the most common residential profile, with a flat back and a molded front that handles large amounts of water and adds strength to the run. Ask your Solutionist about sizes and whether a seamless galvanized run fits your roofline at the free estimate.
Galvanized steel is protected by its zinc coating, so rust starts where that coating is scratched or worn through. Keeping the gutters clean and painted slows it down. If rust resistance is the priority, Galvalume, with its aluminum-zinc coating, outlasts plain galvanized, and it is the steel we point coastal homeowners toward.
Yes. Galvanized steel takes paint, so it can match your trim, or you can keep the natural mill finish. Many owners of contemporary and modern homes keep the raw metal look on purpose. Painted or bare, keeping the finish intact is what protects the steel through the rainy season.
Yes, steel is heavier, so hanger spacing and the condition of the fascia matter more. Before hanging a galvanized system, we make sure the board behind it is solid and replace rotted fascia first. Hung right, a steel run stands up to heavy loads, like a trough full of wet redwood needles in January.
