Gutter sizing on the Peninsula

Why so many Peninsula gutters are the wrong size, and how we fix it

Plenty of homes here still carry the gutters they were built with, one size around the whole house. The right answer is usually a size for each run, set by the water that run actually collects.

Many original systems on the Peninsula went up as a single size on every edge, because that was the simple way to do it. Then additions got built, second stories went on, roofs were redone in tile or metal, and nobody changed the gutters. The result is a system that handles an ordinary rain fine and spills at the same two or three spots every time a winter storm parks overhead.

Gutter size is about capacity. A wider trough holds and moves more water, and a 6 inch gutter carries about 40 percent more than a 5 inch even though it is only an inch wider. What decides the size is the roof above each run: how big it is, how steep it is, and whether valleys or upper roofs are pouring extra water into one spot.

Because the problem is usually local to a few sections, the fix often is too. Mixing sizes on one house, with larger gutters only where the water concentrates, is common and often the most cost-effective option.

Signs a section is undersized

  • It overflows in heavy rain even right after a cleaning.
  • Water shoots over the front edge below a steep roof plane or valley.
  • A lower gutter spills where an upper roof’s downspout empties onto it.
  • One long run drains to a single downspout at the far end.
  • The splash line on the siding or stucco sits under the same corner every winter.
  • The roof was redone in tile or metal and the old gutters stayed.

What we measure before recommending a size

Your Solutionist does not pick a size from the curb. Each run gets measured for length and for the roof area that drains into it, the pitch gets checked because steep roofs throw water faster, and we trace where valleys and upper roofs land. Downspouts get the same attention, since a bigger gutter with a small outlet still backs up. The estimate lists the size for each section so you can see where the money goes.

Size works together with profile and material, covered on our gutter styles and specialty materials pages, and every size is formed on site as part of our seamless gutter installs. If you are in Foster City, Cherry Chase or anywhere else on the Peninsula, we will size your roof the same way.

Gutter Sizes Questions, Answered

What size gutters do I need for my house?

Most single-family homes do fine with 5 inch gutters. Go to 6 inch when a run over 40 feet cannot have two downspouts, a run is longer than 60 feet, an upper roof drains into a lower gutter, or an inside valley sends fast water over the edge in heavy rain. 7 inch is for very large roof areas and commercial buildings.

Can I use two gutter sizes on one house?

Yes, and it is often the most cost-effective fix. Upsize only the sections that need capacity, like a lower gutter catching an upper roof or a run below a valley, and keep 5 inch everywhere else. The profiles line up, so the mix is hard to spot from the street.

Does roof pitch affect gutter size?

Yes. Steeper roofs shed water faster, and on a steep pitch water can overshoot a small gutter in a downpour. Roof area and how much water concentrates into one run matter too. That is why a Solutionist measures the roofline and looks at the pitch before recommending a size, instead of defaulting to one.

Is one extra inch of gutter width really a big difference?

Yes. A 6 inch gutter is only an inch wider than a 5 inch, but it handles about 40 percent more water. In the burst storms the Peninsula gets each winter, that margin is what keeps a long run from spilling at the corner.

Do larger gutters come in colors too?

Yes. Upsizing for capacity does not mean giving up the look you want. Larger gutters come in the same wide range of colors, and we can often match shades outside our regular swatches, like downspouts that match your siding. A Solutionist will show you options at the estimate.

Do you make gutters larger than 7 inch?

For special cases, ask. Most Peninsula homes are covered by 5, 6 or 7 inch, but oversized gutters beyond 7 inch exist for roofs that concentrate unusually large volumes of water. Your local Solutionist can tell you what is available for your roofline.
