East Palo Alto Gutter Solutionists
Gutters for flat, low ground between the creek and the bay
East Palo Alto sits about 20 feet above sea level, bounded by San Francisquito Creek on one side and the bay marshes on the other. Most of its housing came after World War II, when farm parcels were cut into small lots: a third of today’s homes were built in the 1950s, and the median home dates to 1963. Older pockets go back further. Runnymede began in 1916 as the Weeks Poultry Colony, which is where Weeks Street gets its name, and Ravenswood grew around the old wharf at the foot of Bay Road, now Cooley Landing.
Flat ground is the gutter story here. Water that leaves a downspout has nowhere to run, so it pools next to the slab or the crawlspace vents and soaks the soil under the house. The city’s tree canopy is thin, so gutters here clog less from big leaf drops and more from grit, shingle granules, wind-blown litter and whatever one tree in the yard sheds. When a storm parks over the Peninsula, an undersized 1950s gutter overflows at the corners first. We clean by hand and flush every downspout, then extend or bury the lines so the water clears the house.

Usually because the downspouts drop water right at the wall and the ground is too flat to carry it off. On East Palo Alto lots we extend downspouts several feet out or connect them to buried pipe that runs to a curb outlet or a spot in the yard that can take it. A clogged trough spilling over the front edge causes the same problem, so we check both.
No, and we will not claim they do. Flooding from San Francisquito Creek or bay water is a separate problem handled by levees and the regional flood project. What gutters and drains do is keep the roof’s own water off your foundation, walls and crawlspace, which matters on low ground in every storm.
Many are. Gutters from that era are often sectional with seams every few feet and downspouts that are too small or too few. If yours overflow at the corners in a hard rain, new seamless gutters with an added downspout or a larger outlet usually solve it. We measure the roof and put the recommendation in writing.
Not every home does. With a thin tree canopy across much of East Palo Alto, a house with no tree over the roof may do fine with regular cleaning. If a yard tree, a neighbor’s tree or a street tree drops onto your roof, BroGuard keeps the outlets open. We will tell you honestly which camp your house is in.
Yes. We work with owners and property managers on single-family rentals, duplexes and apartment buildings in East Palo Alto, including the Westside. We schedule around tenants, keep the site clean and provide written estimates. Call (650) 600-0598 to set one up.
